What is CPR and AED Awareness Week?

In 2007 the AHA, in collaboration with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, designated June 1-7 as National CPR and AED Awareness week with the goal of spotlighting how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED. The campaign reinforces these skills but also places importance on the willingness of bystanders to act in a cardiac arrest emergency. Along with other National Cardiac Arrest Collaborative members, the American Red Cross stresses that every second counts in cardiac arrest, and that people can save lives by knowing how to perform CPR and use an AED.

Some Sobering Statistics

  • Did you know that about 70% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home? If you are called on to give CPR, most likely it will be for someone you love.

  • Approximately every two minutes, one American dies of sudden cardiac arrest. Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) increases the survival rate from about 5 percent to more than 40%!
