Choosing Between AED Trainers from Prestan Products

A Review of the Features on Prestan AED Trainers and UltraTrainers

Prestan AED UltraTrainer - AED Trainers

Prestan AED trainers of all varieties include a few fantastic features not found on other brands.

Rather than repeat those for each of the Prestan AED trainer types, let’s get some of those out-of-the-way. The most unique feature of Prestan trainers is their pad sensing system. This system automatically detects when each pad is placed on the manikin, which simulates a live AED, allowing for a more realistic training class. All models also include the following features:

All Models Include a Few Great Features

  • Pads come pre-connected for students
  • Shock simulation with 5 scenarios
  • Automatic & semi-automatic shock modes
  • Uses “C” batteries (included) for longer life
  • Low Battery Prompt
  • Industry leading 3 year warranty

The Prestan AED UltraTrainer

When comparing the Prestan UltraTrainer and Professional trainers there are a few things that stand out on the UltraTrainer, not only against the Professional trainer, but to all other trainers on the market. One is its ability to enable/disable the metronome, which is sure to please many instructors. Another unique feature is it’s dual-use adult/pediatric pads that are used on all patients. Instead of pad changes, students use the pediatric patient button on the trainer to accommodate the type of patient, which more accurately reflects the functionality of newer AEDs on the market. And finally, the UltraTrainer allows instructors to disable the rescue breath prompts when teaching hands-only CPR.

In addition to these stand-out differences to all other trainers, the UltraTrainer differs from the Prestan Professional series in a variety of other ways.

  • The unit is small and light weight–Measuring 7.25″ x 5.25″ x 2″ and weighing only 1.2 lbs
  • Less costly–About 40% lower price, making it more affordable to provide each student their own trainer

What the AED UltraTrainer Doesn’t Have

  • Units can not be operated by remote control
  • Although larger than most “economy trainers” on the market, it’s still smaller than most real AEDs

The Prestan Professional Trainer

The Prestan Professional trainer has several great features for instructors. Instructors will find a benefit to being able to do so using a remote (sold separately for some models), which can help with larger classes. The trainers more accurately reflect the size and weight of real AEDs, at 9.5″ x 7.25″ x 2.75″, and weighs 2.2 lbs. Some instructors prefer having separate adult and pediatric pads, which is an option with the Professional model. Instructors are able to choose units which include the pediatric pads and remote, or the trainer without these add-ons.
