DALLAS, August 15, 2017 — The American Heart Association – the world’s leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease – will now require the use of an instrumented directive feedback device (CPR Feedback Device) in all courses that teach adult CPR skills, effective January 31, 2019. The devices provide, real-time, audiovisual and corrective evaluation and instruction on chest compression rate, depth, chest recoil and proper hand placement during CPR training.
Most of you have now heard about the new AHA guidelines concerning the new CPR feedback device. Above is the official statement from the AHA.
Since Prestan Products introduced feedback devices we have made them available to our customers at MCR Medical. We believe in them and their ability to train people on the proper live saving tasks of performing CPR. Several of our customers have feedback devices already and they most of them would not train without them.
Since this information has been released we have fielded numerous calls from customers with questions, comments and concerns on the new guidelines and wanted to reach out to you, the CPR instructors, to get your feedback on the CPR manikins with feedback devices. Being that you are on the front lines you have the best view of what this means to your students and to CPR in general. Please share your thoughts below in the comment section below. So we can become the best resource for the industry, we would like start a dialogue with you. Please take a minute and comment what your questions, comments and concerns are regarding CPR feedback manikins.

I currently have the mankins that have the light to show whether or not compressions are adequate, are these manikins the ones that are being mandated for January 2019

These should be. As long as you have audio feedback as well. Such as a click when compressions are deep enough. Thanks for reading.

The device shows there is feedback on the rate, but depth is not addressed and the requirements by the AHA are for both rate & depth. Am I missing something with regard to depth assessment with the wrist device?
Hi Robert. You are correct in that the wrist device does not offer audio feedback. It does make manikins with a clicking sound compliant since you add the wrist monitor which has visual feedback.

Thanks for your comment and question. Our Practi-CRM wearable monitor would provide the rate feedback the AHA requires but you would still need a feedback device for the depth. I do not believe the Basic Buddy manikins come with any sort of clicker for depth feedback. Ultralite Prestan Manikin Update: it would be awesome if Prestan developed a piston replacement to meet the new AHA standards without replacing the entire manikin set! I like the benefits of carrying light weight manikins and they get the job done, but don’t meet the new AHA requirements. I’ve been holding off until the last months of the year to see what other products come into the market.
I don’t like the idea of students sharing the wristbands because of sweaty folks that come through some of my classes. I imagine this being frowned upon by my students.
Has anyone heard any updates on whether or not a feedback device has been created for current manikins, that provides depth and rate feedback yet? I have been checking into this regularly, but cannot find any solutions that don’t leave my current manikins “out of compliance” and I can’t afford to buy all new manikins.
